"Electromobility is gaining momentum. More and more private individuals and businesses are making the switch. Here at LeasePlan we are also pulling out all the stops to facilitate the transition to electromobility for our customers. With our Knowledge Hub EV, a knowledge centre built entirely around sustainable mobility, we have made substantial investments in our services over the last twelve months. From high-quality charging infrastructures and smart charging passes to flexible refund services: here’s an overview of what has been done so far and the projects that are still in the pipeline.", says Pieter Waegenaer

What has been implemented so far? Clear provisions based on real electricity prices

LeasePlan customers pay a monthly provision for their charging sessions. Subsequently we charge the actual costs per quarter based on the actual electricity prices during that period. At the start of your contract, a practical calculation module gives you a clear projection of the costs involved based on the current parameters. Is the price of electricity going up or down? Then the provision is adjusted accordingly. In other words, what you pay is a reflection of reality. Moreover, you can manage the costs yourself. For instance, if you’re in the habit of charging your car along the motorway this can be quite costly whereas charging at work is much cheaper.

Sustainable partnerships guarantee continuity in service

This past year we’ve invested heavily in sustainable partnerships. LeasePlan uses two fixed suppliers of charging stations and all the corresponding accessories. In this way we provide stability, continuity and a guaranteed supply if there is ever a shortage.

Standard packages with fixed rates

When you lease an EV you always want a fitting charging solution. The big question is this: what does such an installation involve and what is the cost? LeasePlan uses a single pricing model for all suppliers, allowing us to offer optimised charging bundles at fixed rates. This covers all standard installation costs, regardless of your home situation or unforeseen circumstances during the works. Consequently there is no risk of additional charges if something unexpected should happen.

Transparent reimbursement services

If you charge your EV at home you can recover the costs. As of this year you can have the reimbursement of your charging sessions through a monthly subscription included in your contract. Thanks to our connectivity service your home charger is identified and monitored to give you a clear overview of the charging sessions via the driver platform. The possibilities even include tech support from a distance. Based on the collected data, you as a driver are reimbursed at the specified CREG rate. Moreover, the monthly subscription corresponds perfectly with the actual run time of your vehicle. Is your lease contract terminated early? Or is your car total loss after 2 years due to an accident? Then your subscription stops immediately and you won’t pay a cent too much.

Driver switch communication guidance

Turning an EV over to another employee is quite a process. Refund services are linked to the previous driver and the charging pass is registered in their name. There could even be outstanding payments. In short, there’s a ton of things to take care of. LeasePlan has compiled a practical guide in order to streamline the process and, in particular, the relevant communication. A checklist makes it easy for the user to identify the steps that must be taken to submit an application. LeasePlan will then provide you with all the necessary documentation to ensure a smooth driver switch.

Challenges for the future

Automatic synchronisation of the delivery period of the vehicle and the charging installation

Few things are more annoying than having to wait for your charging installation when your electric vehicle is already sitting in your driveway. LeasePlan is currently engaged in negotiations to better gear the delivery periods of vehicles and charging installations to each other. The goal is to automatically link the delivery data of EVs to the desired installation date of the charging infrastructure so users can enjoy the benefits of electromobility without delay.

Charging infrastructure custom-tailored to the home situation

Electromobility may be the future but there is still a great deal of ignorance among the public at large. One of our main goals is to inform as many people as possible. For instance, what is the impact of a specific charging infrastructure on your home situation? What charging capacity can you handle? Which type of charging station best suits your needs? Will your driveway have to be broken up? There’s still a long way to go to bring people up to speed. Through assessments and questionnaires LeasePlan aims to gain a better understanding into the specific situation of every customer. Based on data recording we want to share knowledge in a targeted way so users can ask the right questions and obtain the right information as early in the leasing process as possible.

Smarter charging passes and alternatives

Smarter charging passes are the key to derive maximum financial benefit from electromobility. Still, there is plenty of room for improvement here as well. Charging passes often work in different ways and in many cases the costs lack transparency. LeasePlan continues to scour the market in search of alternative technologies. One of those is RFID, which allows contactless payments via your smartphone: your charging station reads the information and starts counting based on your user profile. Unfortunately this emerging technology is still rather unstable. Many charging stations are not yet able to read RFID tags. One change that is definitely coming is the ability to swipe your charging pass using your smartphone. This technology should be perfected over the next one or two years.

And finally, LeasePlan has developed a Happy Charger charging point disc that EV drivers can use to indicate how much time remains until their vehicle is fully charged. You use it as a parking card and it makes other EV drivers happy because courteous charging is the way of the future. Also become a Happy Charger and request your charging disc on our website.
