The term SUV has for many been shorthand for gas guzzler, but 2021 could be the year that changes that perception! New electric SUV models have already hit the market and this is not only positive for the green transition, the new electric SUVs also position themselves well among their other electric competitors. Three of this year’s finest are the Skoda Enyaq iV, the Volkswagen ID 4 and the Audi Q4 e-tron – all from the same family, but each with its own compelling charms. Car connoisseurs have probably already selected their favourite among, but for everyone else, here are the differences in terms of style, substance and sex appeal when lined up nose to nose.

Skoda Enyaq iV

Strong electric debut from Skoda

The Czech-made Enyaq iV is Skoda's first car launch that holds electrical performance behind a stylish exterior. Built on Volkswagen's modular electric platform (MEB), and with an electric range of up to 500 km, the Enyaq iV is both designed for everyday use and suitable for long-distance journeys. Reviewers have already praised the Enyaq iV for keeping a stable and comfortable ride - also on uneven roads and in tight corners. Depending on the variant, the performance varies from 177 hp on a 62 kWh battery to 201 hp on the 82 kWh battery. With Skoda's entrance into the electrical era, a new interior concept comes along. A spacious, well-equipped cabin, a large 585-liter boot and innumerable little options proudly stand the Enyaq iV alongside more expensive brands. More than 60 % of the polyester material in the cabin is made from recycled bottles, and this sustainable approach is certainly giving Enyaq iV even more bonus points in our book.

Volkswagen ID.4

Futuristic SUV with VW expression

A futuristic SUV that functions like a compact electric car, Volkswagen’s new ID.4 delivers on its reputation as the people’s vehicle. A clean, grill-free front and an intelligent, uncluttered interior with an optional edge-to-edge panoramic roof make for a contemporary urban EV - but its true appeal lies in the range of inbuilt high-tech features. The ID.Light system responds to your voice, while the optional augmented reality technology head-up display projects essential driving information onto your windscreen for the ultimate sci-fi experience. Whether it’s the school run or the occasional day trip, the range of up to 501 km should hold you in good stead. Two battery choices across the five models offer different experiences: the 52 kWh battery in the ID.4 Pure delivers 149 hp, while the 77 kWh battery in the ID.4 Pro extends to 201 hp. Best of all, the ID.4 begins paying off from the moment you drive it off the shop floor: its carbon-neutral credentials mean you benefit from an improved sustainability footprint.

Audi Q4 e-tron

Sportiness meets the family car

With its muscular silhouette complemented by Audi’s trademark feature lines and horizontal rear light strip, the Q4 e-tron is sure to turn heads. Behind its eye-catching, sporty exterior hides a versatile family car at an affordable price, packed with the latest technology. The Q4 offers a choice of three motors, with a maximum output of up to 299 hp and an electric range of up to 520 km. Enhanced aerodynamics means better mileage between charges - although a mere 10-minute juice-up will cover about 130 km. Inside, the Q4 e-tron offers impressive luxurious details: a bespoke dashboard, a funky steering wheel with haptic feedback, a large infotainment screen, and as options, Sonos sound system and augmented reality display. The cabin holds a large trunk that can be expanded up to 1,490 litres, and the interior space is comparable to the larger Audi Q5, which comfortably fits four adults. The Q4 e-tron is one of Audi's most sustainable cars to date, with as many as 27 components made from recycled material. It does not get much better.
