How we check the identity of our customers

At LeasePlan we use an industry leading tool, Onfido, to check the identity of customers to quickly and digitally check your identity.

After uploading your ID, you will be asked to take a selfie (a photo of your face) for confirmation.

How does it work?

We’ll email you an invite for the identity check. When you click on the ‘Verify Now’ button you’ll be taken to a webpage to start the verification process on your computer and on your smartphone, so keep your smartphone at hand.

When you start the check, you can choose to take a photo of your identity document with your smartphone or upload a copy of your identity document from your computer.

The identity check takes place in two steps.

You can choose to:

a) upload a scan or photo of your identity document from your computer it must be well lit and all information must be clearly readable. The entire document must also be on the photo or scan. Cut-off corners and your fingers on the photo can cause errors.

or

b) take a photo of your identity document with your smartphone. A QR code will appear on your desktop for you to scan with your smartphone camera. Click the link that appears to follow the identification steps in the browser on your smartphone.

The browser on your smartphone may ask for access to your smartphone camera to verify your identity.

Position your face in the oval and take a picture of your face without moving. Your face must be clearly visible in the photo. After uploading or taking a clear photo of your ID, and then a selfie, you can send the check and your identity will be checked within a few hours. You will receive a confirmation email when the check is successful.

Why are we asking you to take a selfie? It is not possible for us to physically check whether applicants matches the details on the identity document. A selfie shows that it is the same person and that the person is actively involved in the application process.Where are my document(s) and selfie stored? Your ID and selfie will be kept secure with our partner Onfido, who will temporarily store it in line with our GDPR legislation compliant data processing agreement. We only store data that LeasePlan is obliged to keep that is relevant to the contract.How do I scan a QR code? When you start the check on your desktop, a QR code will appear. You can scan this code with the camera application or a QR code application on your smartphone. You then press the link that appears. After this, the identification process starts in the browser on your smartphone. You may need to enable QR code scanning via your smartphone or download a QR code app. With **iPhone** you do this by navigating to settings > camera > scan QR codes (this slider must be on green). For **Android** phones, not all camera applications have a built-in QR scanner. If your built-in camera app doesn't scan the QR code by itself, you can use a QR code app like Google Lens. How do I give access to my camera? - For i**Phone**, navigate to settings and search for your browser application (e.g. Safari or Google Chrome). You click on the application and scroll to 'Settings on websites'. Here you adjust the setting under 'Camera' to 'Always ask'. If you start the Onfido verification again, the smartphone will ask you to grant access to your camera. This should allow you to proceed in the verification. - On** Android**, go to settings > apps and find the browser you're using. Click on permissions and adjust the access to 'Always ask' for the camera. When you start the Onfido verification again, your smartphone will ask you to grant access to your cameras. This should allow you to proceed in the verification. How do I do the verification via SMS or link instead of the QR code? If scanning the QR code really does not work, you can also choose to receive a link via SMS or to copy it yourself to your smartphone. - To receive the link via **SMS**, click on 'receive a link via SMS' on your desktop. It's at the bottom of the screen where you can scan the QR code. After entering your phone number you will receive an SMS with a link to the verification process. You continue the process as described above. You do not need to scan the QR code. - You can also copy the link yourself. It's at the bottom of the screen where you can scan the QR code. You can type the link yourself in the browser on your smartphone or paste the link in an email to yourself and open the email and link in the browser on your smartphone. You continue the process as described above. You do not need to scan the QR code. Is it safe to upload a photo of my ID? Yes, uploading a photo of your ID is safe. Click on the link for more information about our privacy statement.What happens to the photo and my selfie if the process is not completed successfully? If the process is not fully completed, your documents will be deleted. If your verification is rejected, you will have to go through the process again.Can I also request a lease product without an identity check? Unfortunately this is not possible. We are legally obliged to check whether the applicant for one of our products matches the person on the ID and is actively involved in the application process. It is therefore not possible to verify your identity in any other way.What do I do if I don’t have a smart phone? It may be possible to use a webcam on a computer if the quality is good enough.
