Jeep Avenger

All-electric mini-SUV

The American off-road car brand par excellence has created an all-electric cross-over to cater for the European market: the Avenger. It is Jeep’s new entry-level model and sits on a familiar platform: that of the Peugeot e-2008 & Co.

Jeep is determined to gain ground on the European market. Its first weapon of choice was a plug-in hybrid powertrain, available in the Renegade and Compass and opening the door to corporate fleets. However, the time has come to bring out the big gun - figuratively of course.

The Avenger will be the smallest model in the Jeep range and is also the first to get an all-electric powertrain. The power comes from a 115 kW (156 hp) electric motor driving the front wheels. Indeed, the Avenger will not come as a 4x4, but that will not refrain the intended audience from buying it.

Jeep nonetheless underlines that the Avenger can hold its own on unpaved roads. Its ground clearance of 200 mm is said to be the largest in this segment, while its approach (20°), breakover (20°) and departure (32°) angles are above average.

Furthermore, the Avenger comes standard with SelecTerrain, a system that optimally distributes and controls drive torque according to conditions. It includes six modes: Normal, Eco, Sport, Snow, Mud and Sand. Hill Descent Control is also provided, allowing you to descend a steep slope in a controlled manner.

The interior has an elongated dashboard finished at steering wheel height in the same colour as the bodywork. Between the horizontal air vents and the central control buttons for the infotainment is a large area where you can store a lot of stuff. In the centre console, there is another storage compartment for larger items.

The driver looks out onto a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel that can be personalised. In the centre is an equally large touchscreen that allows you to control just about everything: media, radio, phone, navigation, air conditioning, vehicle settings, and so on. Smartphone integration via Apple Carplay or Android Auto comes standard.

Up to 400 kilometres

The Avenger's lithium-ion battery sits under the front and rear seats and the centre tunnel. It is 54 kWh in size and gives the car a driving range of 400 kilometres in the combined WLTP cycle and 550 kilometres in pure city driving. The powertrain is the same as that of the recently modified Peugeot e-2008 and DS 3 E-Tense: all are on Stellantis' E-CMP base.

The battery can be charged with three-phase alternating current of 11 kW. In that case, count on 5.5 hours to ‘fill’ it from completely empty to completely full. On a DC charger of at least 100 kW, 24 minutes are enough to charge the battery from 20 to 80 per cent.

The Jeep Avenger is currently offered only as a 'full option' 1st Edition. The first units should arrive in showrooms in spring 2023.
