Making Plans In Challenging Times

2 min to readElectric vehicles
While December is usually a time for celebrations, it looks like this winter won’t be a happy one for many – and the outlook for 2023 as a whole isn’t much better. With rising costs and a falling economy, finding ways to save money is likely to be a priority for many individuals, businesses and organisations.

It may seem counter intuitive but one possible way to cut costs for anyone running a number of vehicles, is to consider switching some to electric vehicles. There’s a perception that electric cars and vans are still more expensive than their petrol or diesel equivalents, but the truth can be very different.

When you look at whole life costs, electric vehicles can be cheaper overall – and the potential savings can be seen at every stage of a vehicle’s life, so it doesn’t mean spending money now to save later on.

There’s the lower tax bill for a start and charging is still cheaper than refueling – particularly when drivers charge at home – even with rising electricity costs.

Electric vehicles also tend to be cheaper to keep on the road, as they have far fewer moving parts. An analysis we carried out last year suggested these costs are around 11% lower with an EV (source). Plus, EVs are often exempt from ultra and low emission zone and congestion zone charges and even get free parking in some towns and cities.

If you’d like to see if switching to EVs would work for your fleet, we have several tools to support your analysis.

First of all, you could try our EV versus ICE (internal combustion engine) comparator to see how the costs for specific EVs compare with the ICE vehicles you are currently using.

We also have an EV cost per mile calculator that lets you exploring charging costs more closely and an ‘Is an electric car right for me?’ tool that can help you understand if an EV would meet the specific requirements of individual drivers.

Finally, if you want to benefit from the savings offered by switching, take a look at our EV Readiness tool. It asks a few questions to see how far down the road you are on transitioning to an electric fleet and then breaks down what you still need to do into manageable segments with advice to help guide you forward.
