Lancia Ypsilon

Get ready for Lancia's renaissance

The glorious Lancia brand disappeared from the market in 2016, except in its native Italy. There, it had to survive on just one model: the Ypsilon. Parent company Stellantis, however, is preparing the iconic make's glorious comeback. The first model will be a new Ypsilon, but it will not stop there...

Legacy, Decline, and Revival

Legacy, Decline, and Revival

Lancia has been around since 1906. In its heyday it built fantastic cars like the Flaminia, the Fulvia and the Aurelia B24 Spider, cars that all stood out for their design and unique style. In the 1970s, the manufacturer was even a respected rally champion with the Stratos, which won the world title three times. The carmaker’s rally success continued into the 1980s and early 1990, with the impressive 037 and Delta Integrale winning seven world titles.

However, the brand all but disappeared from the market in the 21ste century. Until recently, its existence was limited to Italy, where the 2011 Ypsilon’s career spanned over twelve years. The model was still the third most popular car in Italy in 2023, incidentally.

Revival of the most elegant brand

Revival of the most elegant brand

The brand's dismal existence will take a turn for the better this year, however. Lancia will be restored to its former status of a brand that attracts aficionados of Italian style, quality and luxury. The relaunch of Lancia as a premium OEM rests on three pillars: electrification, quality and sustainability.

Initially, Lancia will return to the market in Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, France and Belgium, countries that appreciate Italian taste and flair. The new-generation Lancias will be sold both online and offline in a select number of outlets, where the luxurious and homely Italian style will be reflected not only in the cars but also in the materials and colours used in the showroom.

By the end of 2024, there will be more than 70 of them outside Italy, spread across major European cities in the aforementioned six countries.

Pu+RA HPE Concept design language

The brand's revival began with the launch of a new Corporate Identity and the creation of the Pu+Ra HPE Concept, which adopts stylistic elements from the iconic Stratos sports car and the Beta HPE of the 1970s. This concept car signals the design language on which the brand's new models will be based.

The first new model will be the small Ypsilon, technologically the equivalent of the Peugeot 208 and Opel Corsa and the last Lancia ever to be available with both electric and internal combustion engines. With two-year intervals, Lancia will launch two other models by the end of the decade. These will no longer have combustion engines, as Lancia will become an all-electric brand from 2026.

In that year, the Ypsilon will be joined by a new flagship model, the Gamma. A successor to the Delta will follow in 2028.
