BMW X5
Update brings greater driving range for PHEV
- More powerful powertrain
- New Curved Display
- Mild Hybrid on all models
Every BMW model has the right to an update after four years and this is no different for the X5. The SUV gets a facelift and technological tweaks, but the most interesting change takes the shape of a more powerful powertrain and longer driving range for the plug-in hybrid X5.
Redesigned X5
On the outside, you will recognise the redesigned X5 by the new interpretation of the BMW kidneys and the narrower headlights with arrow-shaped daytime running lights that also act as indicators. The rear lights and air intakes in the side panels have also been revisited.
The X5 is now fitted with the xLine design package from the base version. The six-cylinder models of the X5 also get the illuminated radiator grille that was previously reserved for the X6. The X5 offers an optional M Sport package, standard on the X6, that enhances its appearance by incorporating additional black accents and an octagonal black lower bumper for a sportier aesthetic. The X6 is entitled to the M Sport package as standard, which comes as an option on the X5.
Inside, you will find the new BMW Curved Display and BMW Operating System 8 with two digital screens under one curved glass cover plate.
Mild Hybrid on all models
All engines on the X5 get an update that includes 48V Mild Hybrid support. The new eight-speed automatic includes an electric motor that provides a power boost of up to 9 kW and adds 200 Nm of torque for better performance and lower consumption. The V8 on the M60i xDrive models now delivers 530 hp (390 kW). The three-litre petrol sees its output climb to 380 hp (280 kW), whereas the three-litre diesel is now rated at 298 hp (219 kW) and 670 Nm.
All variants of both the X5 are driven on all four wheels by BMW's xDrive system and are entitled to adaptive suspension as standard. Adaptive air suspension on the two axles is available as an option, as is an off-road package.
X5 xDrive50e with more power and driving range
The plug-in hybrid X5 sees its model designation change from xDrive45e to xDrive50e. Both its six- cylinder petrol engine and electric motor gain power and torque. The total system output gets a boost of 70 kW to reach 360 kW (490 hp), while torque rises from 600 to 700 Nm. This results in a faster acceleration from zero to 100 kph: the X5 xDrive50e only needs 4.8 seconds.
Moreover, the floor-mounted battery pack now boasts a capacity of 25.7 kWh – a 25 per cent increase over the 45e. This boosts the plug-in hybrid's electric driving range to up to 110 kilometres according to the WLTP standard, while CO2 emissions remain very low at 18 to 26 grams per kilometre. Charging the battery with alternating current is now possible at 7.4 kW.
