Car functions via the 2G network will continue to work until 2027
Telia has decided to postpone the discontinuation of the 2G network until 2027. The reason is that the network contains several important connected things, such as cars and alarms.
Despite the technology shift that the Post and Telecommunications Board, PTS, has initiated, which means that the 2G and 3G networks are to be phased out by 2025 at the latest, Telia has decided to give its customers more time to develop modern solutions in the 4G and 5G networks.
The 3G network will continue to be phased out relating to the original schedule. According to Telia, this should not be a problem as most mobile phones with support for 3G also work in the 2G network.
The warnings that have appeared in the media that the shutdown may affect functions in the cars will thus be postponed somewhat. Among other things, it is the European emergency service for cars, eCall, which runs via 2G and will now continue to function until 2027. In the event of an accident, eCall is activated and automatically sends the geographical position to an emergency center.
It is mainly older car models, before 2020, that have features that use 2G and 3G modems. This could be remote control of locks and engine heaters or the function to make an emergency call.
The majority of our drivers probably won't notice anything at all on their car from LeasePlan, but maybe you have a second car that could be affected?
