Explosion of e-commerce drives innovation in “last mile” delivery vans

The online shopping boom is rapidly driving innovation in the light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment, with the prospect that the next generation of delivery vehicles entering the market will have smarter, less polluting and more environmentally friendly vehicles. This is one of the main conclusions of the new LeasePlan study "What's Next in LCVs".

Looking at the future, smarter, less polluting and greener vans will become the new normal and there will be no excuse for not switching from a “normal” van to an ecological van. With COVID, people were totally dependent on online shopping, which generated a huge increase in parcel delivery traffic in urban centers. The challenge for SMEs is to manage this growth sustainably, without sacrificing air quality in cities. The good news is that the market is about to receive a new range of sustainable delivery vans, and these have the potential to reconfigure “last mile” delivery logistics and enable zero-emissions operations.

The latest study from LeasePlan includes an overview of the latest trends in VCL and last-mile deliveries, such as the appearance of “logistics centers in the city” and the importance of Big Data and connectivity in changes to last-mile delivery logistics , so that they become smarter and more efficient than ever. It also provides a summary of the next generation of eVCL models that are hitting the market, and gives a special look to two of the most exciting newcomers to the industry: Arrival and Rivian.
