Stay up to date with car taxation

As part of the green transition, meeting the objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and ensuring the rapid penetration of EVs onto Greece's roads, a series of measures and incentives have been put in place to promote electric driving for both drivers and businesses.

More specifically:

EVs are becoming the dominant choice for an increasing number of drivers in Greece. That’s due to many reasons like the exciting driving experience and the fact that such cars are environmentally friendly. Moreover, there many tax incentives now available to EV users. These tax breaks include exemption from vehicle registration fees, lower CO2-based taxation and higher VAT refunds. Using electric vehicles is more affordable now than ever and benefits both the environment and the driver.

The new taxation seeks to ensure that more people choose cars with low CO2 emissions. All cars, apart from EVs, are subject to an additional CO2 charge based on CO2 emissions while driving. For petrol and diesel cars with high CO2 emissions, the CO2 charge will make such cars more expensive.

In particular, the value of a zero- or low-pollutant vehicle releasing up to 50g CO2/km, with a pre-tax retail price (PRTP) of up to € 40,000 to the user is excluded from the calculation of income from salaried work for any period of time during the tax year.

In addition, for leased zero-pollutant corporate passenger vehicles with a maximum pre-tax retail price (PTRP) of up to € 40,000, the company can deduct the lease fee from its gross income augmented by 50%, whereas the rate is 25% for any amount over that figure.

The corresponding discount figures for cars with low emissions of up to 50g CO2/km are 30%, and 15% for the excess.

Εlectric cars are also exempt from luxury tax.

KINOUME ILEKTRIKA 2 (I MOVE ELECTRICALLY 2)

The Ministry of the Environment and Energy's 'Kinoume Ilektrika 2 subsidy program, seeks to promote electric driving and sustainable mobility.

The program can subsidize the long-term leasing of EVs, the installation of a smart charger and the optional scrapping of the old vehicle. Both individuals and companies are entitled to the subsidy and it applies to all leases eligible for inclusion in the program which were entered into from 1.12.2021 onwards.
