Kia EV6 vs. Hyundai IONIQ 5

One family, one platform, two cars

Kia EV6 and Hyundai IONIQ 5 share a significant amount of DNA under the hood, including the new dedicated platform for EVs, E-GMP. So, what distinguishes the Korean crossover cousins from each other? As always, the devil is in the details.

Battery and performance

Battery and performance

Both cars come with a 58 kWh battery in the Standard Range variant, provide 170 hp and accelerate 0-100 in 8.5 sec with rear-wheel drive. The expanded variants with the larger 77.4 kWh battery improve the numbers to 325 hp for Hyundai and 325 hp for Kia. The acceleration from 0-100 km/h drops to 5.4 sec on EV6 and 5.2 sec on IONIQ 5.

The range is also close: Approx. 400 km on the smaller battery variants, where the Longe Range variants peak with up to 485 km for IONIQ 5 and 528 km for EV6.

Ultra-fast charging gets the cars' batteries from 10-80% in approx. 18 min. and both cars support two-way charging that can provide power to other devices, such as a decent coffee machine or a TV in the camping tent. IONIQ 5 has a small advantage that solar cells on the roof can also charge the battery.

Design and tech

Design and tech

The Kia EV6 exudes a modern design with its car proportions and unique, curved light signature over the boot. Inside, the EV6 offers a spacious interior, a floating center console, plenty of USB ports and a cabin with seats created in sustainable materials.

On the other hand, the futuristic Hyundai IONIQ 5 shines with its distinctive design If its sharp angular lines don’t turn heads, the animated game-culture headlights will. The minimalist cabin offers maximum space and front seats that recline nearly flat. In the car, mobile phones can be charged wirelessly.

The cars share tech features: two infotainment screens, side by side in IONIQ 5 and in curved panorama format in EV6. Both cars have head-up displays with virtual reality in the windshield.

There is no doubt that the two models are closely related, and the similarity is even more striking when the Standard Range variants form the basis of comparison. A slight performance edge allows the EV6 to command a higher price.
