Every inch the hero

Dapper and dashing

Dapper and dashing

The British may have left the EU, but one of their most iconic brands returns to Europe this year – by way of China. In a cheeky little twist, the dapper SAIC-manufactured MG Marvel R Electric should be driving out of showrooms across the continent right about now. Designed as a spacious but compact touring SUV, this second-generation EV delivers mid-distance range with a suave and sporty package. With the latest EV technology at an affordable price, this lithe and lean charmer could be a contender for the title of your next car.

Cool and connected

Cool and connected

Priced between 40,000 and 50,000 euros, the MG Marvel R Electric throws down the gauntlet to established players such as Hyundai’s Kona Electric and the Volkswagen ID4. Its futuristic looks and impressive styling will cut a swathe on the roads. Inside there’s enough legroom for two adults in the back to appreciate the nine-speaker Bose audio system from soft plastic and leather seats – provided they limit luggage volume to 357 litres. The cockpit centres around a 12.3-inch digital dashboard and 19.4-inch vertical monitor. From there, drivers connect to the MG iSMART systems for real-time traffic updates, route guidance and points of interest, while the mobile app helps locate your car, set air-conditioning levels, and track battery and CO2-emission levels. You can also use voice commands – which is handy when you want the sliding roof open but can’t take your hands off the wheel.

Strong but stirring

With a front motor complemented by two in the rear, the launch AWD version sprints up to 100km in 4.9 seconds before topping out at 200 km/h, thanks to 288 PS and 665Nm of torque. With 70kWh in the tank, it delivers up to 402km of WLTP-rated range and recharging to 80% only takes half an hour. A nifty V2L (vehicle-to-load) system allows the car to serve as a generator, powering air pumps or even to charge another EV.
