LeasePlan Energy is a smart charging solution for electric vehicles (EVs), offered with joint venture partner PowerD. With LeasePlan Energy, EV drivers are able to save money and reduce their use of gray energy through smart charging, using an iOS app that automatically integrates with their EV charging station and car battery. Through custom algorithms, the app automatically chooses renewable energy sources when they are most abundant and cheapest, passing the savings onto the customer.
The first year: Putting customers first
Since its launch, the focus for LeasePlan Energy has been to gather feedback from clients to better understand their wants, needs and behaviours. This input has provided the opportunity to optimise the entire customer journey:
- A key change has been the development of a new platform where any EV driver can order a charging point and arrange installation
- Accompanying this are smart charging profiles for different vehicle models, based on an improved algorithm
- The Smart Charging app has also been updated, allowing clients to check their energy usage at a glance

What’s next?
With the framework for LeasePlan Energy well established in the Netherlands, the time has come to look to new horizons. In September 2021, LeasePlan Energy will begin to roll out its services to other European countries. Preparations are also underway for scenarios where energy can be stored or returned to the grid, homes and offices.
